Dear Students and Graduates,
The School of Divinity at New College houses a thriving, highly-ranked research community. The School has three strategic priorities in research which are: to promote individual research excellence, to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and to support outward engagement.
Divinity at God Embassy focuses on the study of the Christian faith and tradition in the context of its history, institutions and its role today. Whether you have a personal, vocational or intellectual interest in learning more about the Christian faith, or want to explore the world's major religions, God Embassy is the place for you. You will gain, and great transferable skills which open a wide range of career options, in addition to ministry.
Commissioned Pastors in the Reformed Church in America are individuals who have demonstrated spiritual giftedness and church leadership. Their calling and competencies have been confirmed so that they became credentialed as pastoral leaders in churches and church-related ministries.
Commissioned Pastors are appointed to their positions after being ordained as Elders and demonstrating competency in the areas of
1. Maturity of faith and personal integrity,
2. Understanding of Old and New Testaments, biblical interpretation, Reformed theology, church history,
Knowledge of and adherence to the Constitution of the Reformed Church in America (the Government, the
Standards, and the Liturgy),
3.Ability to preach, teach, and administer the sacraments,
4. Capability to provide organizational leadership that includes adherence to pastoral ethics and practices.
Commissioned Pastors are Elders who are trained, commissioned, and supervised by a classis (regional group of churches) for a specific ministry within that classis that includes the preaching of the Word and the celebration of the sacraments.
This paper has described and explained a non-formal, experiential, ministry-based, and multiplication-oriented approach to ministry education. It will meet many of the current needs for the shaping of pastoral leaders. The required areas of competency provide clear content expectations for Commissioned Pastor training
